Why Take TNCC?
Excellence in trauma nursing contributes to optimal patient outcomes and the prevention of
complications, long-term consequences, and death for patients.
The purpose of the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) is to provide registered nurses with evidence-based core knowledge, assessments, and
skills involved in the assessment and management of injured patients.
Course Description
The program consists of various modes of instruction, including skill stations and interactive in-person
or virtual learning. The framework of TNCC is based on the trauma nursing process (TNP), which is
emphasized throughout the program. Classroom activities highlight critical concepts presented in the
chapters and online modules to reinforce learning and the trauma nursing process. The skill stations
involve applying the TNP to realistic patient scenarios to transfer learning which can be incorporated
into nursing practice.
Course Learners
All nurses involved in the care of trauma patients may benefit from this course. Content is targeted to
the acute, resuscitation and stabilization phase of trauma care and focuses on the role of the nurse. It is
expected that the course learner will possess a basic nursing knowledge, have an understanding of
emergency care terminology, and be familiar with standard emergency equipment. The curriculum is
designed to allow less experienced nurses to acquire essential knowledge and skills. Post-course
mentoring and support are essential to further develop and master trauma nursing expertise. Nurses
experienced in trauma care will expand their knowledge base with updated evidence-based content to
validate and improve established practice.
Upon successful completion of the course, registered nurses (RNs) are verified as TNCC providers for 4 years.
